Jury holds teacher's life in its hands

The defence, in opening its case in the sex abuse trial against a Horowhenua teacher, told the jury they hold his life in their hands.

Michael Neville is facing four indecent assault charges against girls, all former students of his.

Neville's lawyer told the jury this afternoon in Palmerston North that the allegations border on being ruinous to a man who has committed himself to improving the lot of children.

Neville himself has started giving evidence. The 48-year-old talked about how he decided to go to teacher's college after being told he had a natural affinity with children.

The defence is calling 16 witnesses and the trial will go into next week.
