Teacher has union support

A Horowhenua teacher acquitted of sex abuse charges has the full support of his union.

A jury in the Palmerston North District Court has found Michael Neville not guilty of indecently assaulting four pupils under the age of 12.

The primary teachers union welcomes the acquittal.

NZEI national secretary Lynne Bruce says from the information Mr Neville's legal team provided, the union had formed the view he was innocent.

She says the case shows the potential vulnerability of all teachers in the education system, highlighting the occupational hazards male teachers face.

She says the union will review the case and consider its implications.
