Dewar takes stand, denies charges

The public gallery is packed as John Dewar gives evidence at his trial at the High Court in Hamilton.

The former boss of the Rotorua CIB is charged with attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice, in relation to rape complaints by Louise Nicholas.

Dewar spent much of the morning telling the jury about close friends and even family members he investigated and charged during his police career. He said he carried out his duties in accordance with the oath he took, without fear or favour.

Dewar said Louise Nicholas never raised any allegation of being raped by Clint Rickards, Brad Shipton or Bob Schollum with him.

In response to defence counsel questioning, Dewar said he had extremely minimal contact with all three because Shipton moved to Tauranga, Schollum to Mt Maunganui and Rickards had also left Rotorua.
