Nicholas vs John Dewar |

The trial of former Rotorua
detective John Dewar is moving into its closing stages with the closing
arguments being presented in the High Court in Hamilton today. Fifty-five-year-old Dewar is
charged with attempting to obstruct or defeat the course of justice between
1993 and 1995 by allegedly failing to investigate rape complaints against
three fellow officers made by Louise Nicholas. Mrs Nicholas had complained
against now suspended assistant commissioner Clint Rickards and former
officers Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum. The Crown's case hinges on Dewar's
apparent unwillingness to investigate the claims, or even take a statement,
but the Defence says Ms Nicholas did not want to make a statement and Dewar
did not chase up the claims because he did not want to risk her being charged
with perjury. The judge is expected to sum up
tomorrow. |
