Crown says Dewar defence untenable

The Crown has offered the jury ten reasons to reject the defence of former Rotorua CIB chief John Dewar.

His trial for attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice is reaching its final stages, with both sides giving their closing addresses today.

Crown Prosecutor Brent Stanaway told the jury it is untenable to believe defence evidence that is so contradictory to that given by Crown witnesses, some of whom had fastidious notes.

He said John Dewar was a man who deliberately deceived his superiors to keep the Louise Nicholas complaint hidden and used his position of power to manipulate Mrs Nicholas.

Dewar's demeanour also came under fire, with Mr Stanaway telling the jury Dewar's belligerence under cross examination was the behaviour of someone with something to hide.
