Lawyers to present closing arguments

The Crown and Defence are to give their closing arguments in the trial of a former police inspector accused of covering up historical rape allegations against three police officers.

John Dewar is facing four charges of obstructing justice after the Crown says he covered up the complaints from Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas.

Mr Dewar spent yesterday giving evidence on his own behalf and being cross examined in the High Court in Hamilton.

He denied the charges, saying he didn't pursue the allegations because he felt she was lying and didn't want her to suffer any more.

Mr Dewar also said he only heard of the claims at the trial of another officer accused of raping Mrs Nicholas.
