Former top policemen John Dewar
"deliberately and arrogantly" manipulated Louise Nicholas and the
trials of a former policeman in order to protect his mates, a jury was told
today. Crown prosecutor Brent Stanaway
made the comments in his closing address at the trial of Dewar at the High
Court in Hamilton. Dewar, 55, self-employed of
Hamilton, faces four charges of attempting to obstruct or defeat the course
of justice between 1993 and 1995. Mr Stanaway told the jury Dewar
was aware of Mrs Nicholas' allegations that she was raped by one police
officer, and sexually attacked by now suspended assistant commissioner Clint
Rickards and former police officers Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum, but failed
to follow proper procedure because he wanted to "assist and protect his
mates". Dewar "persuaded and
deflected Louise Nicholas's desire to complain about Mr Rickards, Shipton and
Schollum", Mr Stanaway said. Dewar's defence lawyer will
deliver his closing address this afternoon. |
