Three men made brief
appearances in courts yesterday charged with an alleged 1989 abduction and
rape of a woman in Mount Maunganui. A fourth man was also
charged last night over the same incident and was expected to appear in
Tauranga District Court this morning. Deputy Police
Commissioner Steve Long said the arrests came after investigations by
Wellington-based police who had worked on the case since April. He would not make
public the names of the accused before they appeared in court "so that
any potential applications for suppression could proceed without
prejudice". All three men were
granted name suppression when they appeared yesterday. Two of the men appeared
in Tauranga District Court. The third man appeared in Napier District Court. All three entered no
pleas to charges of detaining without consent with intent to have sexual
intercourse, unlawful sexual connection and rape at Mt Maunganui in January
1989. They were all remanded
on bail to reappear in Tauranga on August 2. |
