Four men were committed for trial after their lawyers conceded there was a prima facie case to answer. The fifth man has never been identified.

A woman who has made historical rape allegations against four men says she was powerless to do anything other than follow instructions as she was attacked 15 years ago. The woman's allegations of the pack rape, which police say happened at Mt Maunganui in January 1989, were revealed for the first time during a depositions hearing in the Tauranga District Court yesterday.

by Haydon Dewes -  Four men have been sent for trial on rape and abduction charges after an alleged pack-rape in Mt Maunganui 15 years ago. The four, their identities protected by suppression orders made in Tauranga District Court yesterday by Judge Oke Blaikie, will appear in the High Court at Rotorua next year to defend charges of rape, sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, and abduction. The accused are a Tauranga man, 46, a Papamoa man, 40, a Mt Maunganui man, 45, and a 52-year-old whose place of residence was suppressed. ……………They say that in January 1989, a 20-year-old woman seconded to work in Mt Maunganui for six weeks was enticed to a building and then sexually assaulted by five men in what prosecutor Brent Stanaway yesterday described to the court as a "pack-rape".

The men were aged in their 20s at the time and had their photo taken with a group of people at the bar of the landmark hotel in January 1989. A spokesman at the Office of the Commissioner said there were fewer than 10 people in the photo but the others had not been able to identify the two mystery men

by Rosaleen MacBrayne - Police investigating the alleged rape of Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas have arrested four men in connection with a separate rape complaint. The alleged rape took place in Mt Maunganui at New Year in 1989.

The man who appeared in Napier faced counts of unlawful sexual connection, sexual violation by rape and detaining a person without consent in order to have sexual intercourse, before Judge Tony Adeane. In Tauranga, one defendant was charged with two counts each of rape and unlawful sexual connection and one of detaining. The other accused each faced a charge of rape and detaining.

A police spokesman said the police officers working on the inquiry were the same ones investigating the case of Louise Nicholas, who alleged in January that she was pack-raped and violated with a police baton by three police officers in 1986. But they said the latest case was entirely separate to any matters involving Ms Nicholas.…………..
