Four men charged with the
rape and detention of a woman at Mt Maunganui 15 years ago have been remanded
on bail until September 6, when a date will be set for a depositions hearing. Three defendants from
Tauranga and one from Napier, who first appeared two weeks ago, were excused
from attending the Tauranga District Court yesterday. Judge Ian Thomas, who
adjourned the case without plea, continued interim name suppression and
allowed some amendments to existing bail conditions. Paul Mabey, QC,
appearing for one of the men, argued successfully that the four should not be
banned from having contact with one another. "It is unnecessary
as a term of bail and achieves nothing," Mr Mabey said. |
