Four men accused of
historical rape and abduction charges have been further remanded on bail,
Tauranga District Court was told yesterday. Judge Peter Rollo said the
hearing on October 11, when witness briefs would be disclosed, would also be
used to schedule a pre-depositions hearing. The four men, who have
continued interim name suppression, do not have to appear in court next month
and remain on bail. An argument on continued suppression will be heard on
September 21. The charges relate to
an incident in Mt Maunganui between January 1 and 31, 1989, and include five
charges of rape, three counts of unlawful sexual connection, three of
detaining for sexual intercourse and one charge of sexual violation by rape. The four accused
include two Tauranga men, aged 39 and 46, a Mt Maunganui man, 45, and a
52-year-old Napier resident. The police prosecution
said October 22 was the earliest date to hear witness briefs because the 50
witnesses each needed to be visited. However, having the late October date
would cause a significant delay, Tony Blame, lawyer for one of the accused,
said. |
