Police need the public's help in identifying the two men highlighted in 1989

Police want to speak to two men who were drinking at the Oceanside Hotel in Mt Maunganui more than 15 years ago.

The men were aged in their 20s at the time and had their photo taken with a group of people at the bar of the landmark hotel in January 1989.

A spokesman at the Office of the Commissioner said there were fewer than 10 people in the photo but the others had not been able to identify the two mystery men.

Police investigating a historic sexual assault hope the men can help the inquiry.

The police spokesman said he could not comment any further as the case was before the courts.

Four men with interim name suppression are facing charges that include rape, unlawful sexual connection and detaining without consent.

The charges date back to New Year 1989 and relate to events alleged to have occurred at Mt Maunganui.

The four were arrested in July by police investigating the alleged rape of Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas, but the complaints were separate to that case.
