Jury tradition questioned

Constitutional law expert Bill Hodge says the New Zealand tradition of keeping the media away from juries needs to be looked at, especially in cases such as yesterday's pack rape verdicts.

A jury has found four men guilty of luring a woman to a beach hut 16 years ago and taking turns to violate her. The victim was 20 at the time and laid a complaint with police last year.

Dr Hodge says the events in the trial happened 16 years ago and it was a "he-said, she-said" situation. He says it would be good to hear just what is going on in the minds of the jury and why they decided on guilty verdicts.

He suspects an incident where one of the men said he did not have to rape a woman because he could get any woman he wanted, probably did not endear him to the jury.
