South Island Zimbabwean community
leader Hylton Chaza spoke to the family and understood Charlene had
been ill before her death and may have had pneumonia.

Police also rejected it. Detective Inspector Malcolm Johnston said “there was
no evidence to suggest she had been sick or ill”

a 10-year-old girl who did not die of natural causes, who did not die by
accident and who died, as the pathologist has said, by suspected suffocation.
Therefore it is a homicide inquiry."

The family were immigrants from
Zimbabwe. Charlene was living at the
house with her 12-year-old sister, aunt and uncle, and two adult cousins,
aged 20 and 24. They were all in the house when she was found.
Charlene’s parents died in
Zimbabwe when she was young, and she and her sister immigrated over a year
ago. Her adoptive family had been in Christchurch for about three years.
The occupants of the house have
been described as a "normal, lovely family". The man was studying
veterinary science and the woman was a caregiver.
Charlene was a pupil at Ilam's
Wairakei School. Principal Lee McArthur said: "She was a fabulous little
girl, with a sunny nature. She fitted into our school extremely well."

Johnston refers to it being a mystery “ as to how the injuries were
inflicted”, and says a sexual attack has not been ruled out
He also says an “extensive
examination has ruled out the theory of an intruder being involved”. The
local community in the area would have been "justifiably concerned"
if it appeared an intruder was on the loose. "We're reasonably confident
that's not the case.

Second post mortem
Detective Inspector Malcolm
Johnston said police were no closer to identifying how the girl
sustained her injuries. "It's a real mystery," he said. "We've
spoken to all family and are no closer to finding out what's happened to this
young girl." The police are
initially focussing on whether an intruder was involved.
A second post mortem is being
carried out. Police are trying to establish what led to Charlene Makaza
suffering breathing difficulties in bed in her Ilam home.
